Mexican Period 1821-1850

The Mexican Period 1821-1850 refers to the period of Mexican control from Mexico’s independence from Spain in 1821 until California became part of the United States in 1850. This period includes the granting of the Rancho Laguna de los Palos Colorados Land Grant to Joaquin Moraga and Juan Bernal and the history of the area as part of Mexico.

Susan Skilton, Director of Research for the Moraga Historical Society, has prepared several presentations which deal with researching the genealogy of early residents of California that she lists on her web site SkiltonResearch. The presentation Pairing Research of Alta California Land Grants with Family History, which uses the Moraga Family as a case study, is available on YouTube.
