Resources – Collection Archive General Subject Index

The Collection Archive General Subject Index consists of 24 subjects which includes an Undefined category for items to which we have not yet assigned a general subject for a scanned item and a Miscellaneous subject for those where our classification attempt failed. The Catalog for each General Subject combines photo, slide, document, and map items sorted alphabetically by the assigned General Subject and then by the item’s date.

Agricultural	Related to farming, ranching, logging
Arts & Entertainment	Anything to do with art or entertainment that involves performance or teaching
Biographical	An identified individual or family is the focus.
Commercial	Businesses or physical locations such as shopping centers, office complexes, storage places, not involved in manufacturing which have a commercial purpose.
Educational	Schools including colleges or teaching organzations, not including sports or arts training.
Environmental	Things to do with geology, paleontology, ecology, nature, wildlife, environmental studies
Government	Anything to do with politics and the mechanisms of government such as town planning, includes military topics, government institutions such as post offices and libraries, excludes schools.
Historical	History prior to the Rancho land grant but after geology and paleontology and not including Native Americans.
Industrial	Anything to do with manufacturing or production, excluding agricultural.
Infrastructure	Services such as utilities (water, power, sanitation, communications) or protection such as fire and police departments but not including transportation infrastructure such as roads and railways.
Litigation	Documents to do with legal cases.
Maps & Aerials	Maps, blueprints and aerial photos.
Miscellaneous	Tried to assign one of the general subjects but failed.
Media & Communications	Newspapers, radio, forms of communication, not including transmission infrastructure.
Native Americans	Anything to do with indigenous people.
Organizations	Volunteer style or non-profit organizations, not commercial or governmental organizations.
Parks & Recreation	Anything to do with parks and recreational activity not including organized sports or audience directed entertainment, includes festivals and celebrations.
Rancho Land Grant	Anything to do with the Rancho Land Grant starting with its application in the 1800’s and ending with the sale to Moraga Company in early 1900. Includes historic landmarks such as the Moraga Adobe.
Religion	Places of worship such as churches, synagogues, temples and mosques as well as missions. Also documents about religion.
Residential	Anything to do with residences, from specific lots, to subdivisions, apartment complexes and retirement-nursing complexes.
Sports	Organized sports at school, recreational and traveling league levels, ie soccer, swimming, football etc
Transportation	Anything to do with roads and railways.
Undefined	Default – no attempt has been made to assign a general subject
