Stop 3 – Willow Spring School II: 1689 School Street

  • The first Willow Spring School was a wooden structure located across from the area now known as Moraga Commons. Established in 1855 as a private institution, Willow Spring School became a public school and part of Willow Spring School District in 1857. Students could only study through grade 8; securing and retaining qualified teachers was an ongoing problem. After Willow Spring School II was opened in 1917, Willow Spring School I was moved to the Moraga Ranch site where the structure served as a recreation hall for ranch workers until it burnt down in August 1954.
  • Willow Spring School II, located at 1689 School Street, was built in 1916 by the Moraga Company and operated from 1917 to 1958.The photo shows the graduating class in 1919. Note the Willow Spring II plaque.
  • Willow Spring School II is now Willow Spring Church.
